General Duties: This position serves under the Police Sergeant or Officer-In-Charge (OIC), and is based on the needs of the department. Working hours will not extend past twenty-four (24) hours in a week. Responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to: supplementing full-time staff by being available to work varying shifts and positions deemed necessary by the Chief of Police; performing general duty and highly specialized police work in the enforcement of federal, state, and local laws, including administrative regulations and ordinances; patrolling designated areas on foot or in a cruiser to preserve law and to prevent and discover the commission of crime; securing crime scenes and aiding in investigations; preparing reports and giving testimony in court; enforcing parking regulations and executing traffic stops ; receiving complaints and responding to requests for police assistance; providing traffic control; and cooperating with other law enforcement agencies and emergency personnel.

Education and Experience Qualifications: Must be twenty-one (21) years of age and possess a High School diploma or General Educational Development certificate (GED); as well as a valid driver’s license. Peace Officer Professional Standards (POPS) certification is required with a minimum of one (1) year of experience as a sworn police officer.

Additional Training Requirements: Must maintain current POPS certification and attend forty (40) hour in-service training annually.

Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of the principles, practices, and techniques of modern law enforcement. Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws and ordinances relating to police activities. Knowledge of the geography of the city, including interior plans of major buildings. Skill in the use of firearms. Analytical and problem-solving ability. Ability to prepare and maintain required reports. Ability to communicate professionally and effectively both orally and in writing with other employees, organizations, and the general public. Proficiency with a computer and competency with Microsoft Word and Outlook.

Salary Information: $20.00/hour.
