POSITION SUMMARY: Works under the direct supervision of the Fire Chief with responsibility for oversite of departmental policies and procedures, staff training and development, and operational functions. Position is responsible for compliance with all federal, state, and local firefighting and occupational safety regulations.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBLITIES:

  • Responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of the fire department, including both shift and administrative functions within the department.
  • Acts as the primary coordinator of the department in management scenarios for large fires, rescues, and other emergencies.. 
  • Assist as the incident commander on large fires, hazardous materials incidents, and other emergency scenes as needed.
  • Provides tracking and accounting of fire department financial concerns including payroll, purchasing, and billing.
  • Assist in the Fire Chief in the recruitment and onboarding process of new personnel.
  • Responsible for serving as the department head in the absence of the Fire Chief.
  • Develops short and long-term assignments for departmental activities.
  • Plans and coordinates fire personnel training programs.
  • Responsible for administering daily assignments to the Battalion Chiefs and other shift officers.
  • Coordinates work schedules for shift personnel to maintain adequate and consistent staffing levels.
  • Responsible for periodic inspections of fire stations, facilities, grounds, and apparatus, and will make maintenance recommendations as necessary.
  • Assists the Fire Chief with the preparation and administration of the annual departmental budget.
  • Assiststhe Battalion Chiefs with developing goals and objectives for the continuous, progressive development of firefighters.
  • Responsible for the day-to-day supervision of the fire personnel.
  • Ability to perform firefighter and emergency medical technician duties as needed.
  • Develops, implements, and manages departmental training programs.
  • Responsible for the compliances with federal, state, and local firefighting and occupational safety regulations.
  • Makes purchase recommendations to the Fire Chief when equipment is needed.
  • Assists the fire chief in writing grants for equipment or personnel.
  • Assists the fire chief in developing and updating the Fire department’s SOG’s.


EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

  • HS Diploma or GED required.
  • Bachelor’s degree in fire science, public administration, or related field preferred.
  • Minimum of 7-10 years of experience in fire suppression, fire services, and emergency medical services.
  • 2+ years of experience as a Battalion Chief or higher in a fire department.
