The City of Shelbyville’s Public Works Department is accepting applications for a full-time superintendent of public works.

General Duties: Under general supervision by the city engineer/public works director, this position is responsible for all phases of administration and management of the Public Works Department. Responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to: planning, organizing, directing, supervising, and participating in the repair and maintenance of streets and roads; directing snow/ice removal and street cleaning; planning, organizing, directing, supervising, and participating in the repair and maintenance of city facilities; performing skilled work in building, electrical, carpentry, plumbing, and equipment operations; keeping records of work completed; securing access to facilities as needed; working with Code Enforcement in administering the city’s non-penal codes regarding weeds, trash, junk cars, etc.; assisting in the preparation of the department budget; conferring with other departments to coordinate city activities; and supervising department personnel in daily operations.

Education and Experience Qualifications:

• A High School Diploma or General Educational Development certificate (GED).
• A minimum of eight years of experience in related field, including supervisory and administrative experience.
• The ability to possess the minimum of a class B commercial driver’s license (CDL) issued by the Commonwealth of Kentucky within six months from date of hire.

Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Considerable knowledge of the materials, methods, and techniques utilized in the construction, cleaning, operation, and maintenance of roadways. This includes storm sewers, sidewalks, culverts, and related infrastructure. Knowledge of the geography of the city. Knowledge of the operating characteristics, occupational hazards, safety precautions, and servicing methods of departmental vehicles and equipment. Ability to supervise the work of subordinates while assisting with the work. Ability to prepare accurate records and reports. Working knowledge of equipment and supplies used to do minor repairs. Knowledge of first aid and applicable safety precautions. Ability to work independently and to complete daily activities according to work schedule. Ability to use equipment and tools properly and safely. Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with city officers and employees, contractors, and the general public.

Salary Information: $75,400 -$94,225 based on education and experience. Excellent benefits package.
