The Shelbyville Police Department is accepting applications for full-time police laterals.
General Duties: This position serves under the police sergeant and routinely works a 40 hour work week.
Responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to: enforcing federal, state, and local laws, administrative regulations and ordinances; patrolling on foot or in a cruiser to preserve the law and to prevent and discover the commission of crime; securing crime scenes and aiding in investigations; preparing reports and giving testimony in court; enforcing parking regulations; receiving complaints and responding to requests for police assistance; providing traffic control; cooperating with other agencies in emergency situations; and attending mandatory continuing education programs.
Education and Experience Qualifications: Must be 21 years of age and possess a High School diploma or General Educational Development certificate (GED); as well as a valid driver’s license. Peace Officer Professional Standards (POPS) certification is required with a minimum of one year of experience and field training as a sworn police officer.
Additional Training Requirements: Must complete all annual training requirements.
Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of the principles, practices, and techniques of modern law enforcement. Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws and ordinances relating to police activities. Knowledge of the geography of the city, including interior plans of major buildings. Skill in the use of firearms. Analytical and problem-solving abilities. Ability to prepare and maintain required reports. Proficiency with assigned computer and operating systems to review and submit reports electronically. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with city officers and employees, other police departments/agencies, and the public.
Salary: Compensated based upon years of service in law enforcement. The department participates in hazardous duty retirement and utilizes the KLEPF fund. The department has shift differential pay for 2nd and 3rd shift so that officers enjoy an increase of $1.50 an hour for 2nd shift and $2.00 an hour for 3rd shift. Any officer assigned as an officer in charge (OIC) for a shift in the absence of a sergeant will be given an additional $2.00 an hour for supervisory pay. Excellent benefit package includes health, dental, and vision insurance; life insurance; 401k or 457 plans; military leave; sick leave; and other paid time off (accrued vacation and holiday hours to be used throughout the year).
Other: A take-home departmental vehicle can be assigned to officers who live within 35 miles from the police station. Off duty details are approved on a case-by-case basis. All uniforms and equipment are provided by the department.
