The Kentucky League of Cities launched the Dr. Joseph W. Coleman Memorial Scholarship on April 1, 2023, to honor Joseph’s lifelong commitment to continuous learning and local government. Joseph passed away suddenly in January 2023 after a lengthy career serving KLC members. The scholarship recognizes his dedication to education and local governance while creating a legacy forward for future generations of Kentucky leaders.
Joseph was passionate about higher education and earned his doctoral degree shortly before passing. An expert in parliamentary procedures, Joseph possessed a wealth of knowledge on municipal governments, federal policy, and government organization. The Dr. Joseph W. Coleman Memorial Scholarship seeks to honor his contributions to Kentucky and his generous spirit by supporting students pursuing a Master of Public Administration degree.
KLC will accept applications from any Kentucky student attending a Kentucky-based institution, both in-person and online. KLC staff and their family members are not eligible. The League will award $5,000 a year to one recipient. The scholarship will not automatically renew; previous winners may apply for subsequent years.
