Appalachian cities can apply for this year’s Abandoned Mine Lands Economic Revitalization (AMLER) grants. The Kentucky Division of Abandoned Mine Lands will accept applications through April 8, 2024.
Kentucky Fifth District Congressman Hal Rogers (R) established the AMLER program in 2016 to help coal-producing states revitalize amid the downturn of the coal industry. Over the past seven years, it has awarded nearly $200 million to 87 projects in 25 Eastern Kentucky communities. That includes 14 applications approved in 2023 for $26.6 million in grant funding.
Each application must include details of its economic and community advantages and a connection to pre-law coal mining (mining completed before May 18, 1982).
Previous successful grant applications include industrial development, workforce training, infrastructure, tourism, agriculture, agritech, and community wellness projects.
