2024 Local Housing Data Available for Cities

The Kentucky League of Cities (KLC) began examining the issue of housing in 2021. In addition to examining the worst outcomes of the crisis—homelessness and the plight of the unhoused—KLC has since partnered with experts, developers, and other key stakeholders to provide up-to-date housing resources and all types of housing information to KLC members.

Housing inventory is an issue in communities across Kentucky. While cities and regions strive to attract good jobs and quality of life, affordable and market-rate housing are instrumental foundations for success. Three studies done in the past year conclude that supply shortage is Kentucky's most pressing housing issue.

Information is available on all levels of housing and how communities fare locally in terms of inventory so stakeholders can work together on solutions to Kentucky's housing shortages. All 120 counties are facing a housing gap—it does not only affect urban areas; many rural communities have a larger supply gap in proportion to their population. While the housing supply shortage significantly impacts lower-income Kentuckians, there are gaps across the income spectrum for all types of housing.

As city leaders discuss, plan, and explore their strategies for housing and how it affects other aspects of city success, KLC will continue to research and partner with experts to share information, provide learning events and opportunities for city input.
