Cities Could Have Money in Treasurer’s Unclaimed Property Fund

The Kentucky State Treasurer administers Kentucky’s Unclaimed Property Fund, which features nearly $800 million in assets.

For cities and municipal agencies, unclaimed funds typically consist of taxes, insurance premiums, or other payments. For individuals, it generally consists of payroll checks, unclaimed safety deposit boxes, old life insurance policies, stocks, or vendor checks that have remained unclaimed by their owners after several years. After about three years, banks and other financial institutions turn over the unclaimed property to the Kentucky State Treasury. Cities, counties, businesses, utilities, and other entities can search for unclaimed funds. Individuals can search for property for themselves or deceased loved ones to discover if they have any unclaimed assets or funds.

Search the database here to see if your city is entitled to unclaimed funds from the state office.

The National Association of State Treasurers also has a national database of unclaimed funds.

Unclaimed property scams have been reported. The treasurer’s office will never request your credit card or banking information.
