The City of Shelbyville’s Public Works Department is accepting applications for a full-time Stormwater/Engineering Technician.

General Duties: This position is supervised by the city engineer/public works director, and responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to: assisting the city engineer/public works director in administering the Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4) Program; providing onsite construction inspections (erosion control, illicit discharges, etc.) on projects as assigned; assisting applicants and reviewing stormwater applications and plans for compliance with stormwater regulations; providing outreach and education to the public regarding stormwater facilities and best practices; providing training on pollution prevention; assisting with the collection, review, and maintenance of the geographic information system (GIS) storm system inventory; performing routine and complex technical drafting work for engineering and Public Works’ programs and projects; assisting in the organization and maintenance of engineering infrastructure records and databases; assisting the city engineer/public works director and the public works superintendent to organize and maintain office files and records, accurate and current safety and training records, and vehicle maintenance records; performing a variety of other office related functions such as filing, preparing correspondence, presentations, brochures, or responding to inquiries from businesses, the public, and other staff; assisting with snow and ice removal on roads and sidewalks; and assisting with emergency operations and roadway traffic control in the event of flooding, storms, or downed debris.

Education and Experience Qualifications:

  • A High School Diploma or General Educational Development certificate (GED), supplemented by a two year degree or related technical or college training in geography, planning, civil engineering, physical or environmental science, or a closely related field.
  • A minimum of two years of related work experience; or any equivalent combination of education and work experience. Additional related experience may be substituted for education requirements as deemed appropriate.

Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: A comprehensive knowledge of technical drafting skills, practices, and methods as applicable to a municipal setting; some knowledge of applicable city policies, laws, and regulations; the ability to perform moderately complex mathematical functions (i.e. college algebra or trigonometry) in order to perform job-related functions; the ability to use graphic instructions such as blueprints, layouts, or other visual aids; the ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing; the ability to establish and maintain good communications; the ability to meet deadlines; and the ability to work effectively on individual and team projects.

Salary Information: $48,050 -$58,875 based on education and experience. Excellent benefits package.
