The Internal Revenue Service announced on June 9 a rare mid-year increase of its standard mileage rate for the business use of employees’ vehicles. The increase is due to increased gas prices. The last time the IRS instituted a mid-year increase was in 2011.
As of July 1, 2022, the standard mileage rate will increase by 4 cents ‒ from 58.5 cents per mile to 62.5 cents. Cities and agencies using the IRS standard mileage rate should be aware of the increase for any mileage expenses occurring after July 1. This does not affect cities using the Commonwealth of Kentucky rate, which changes quarterly.
