Registration Open for Reverse Salt Auction

City officials can now register for this year’s Reverse Road Salt Auction. The Kentucky Association of Counties (KACo) administers the auction to help local governments save on procurement costs. Auction administrator Orbis says cities and counties save around 20%.

The 2023 salt auction is June 6 - 7. Cities should be preregistered by May 19. Participants will be grouped based on their locations for a total of six auctions ‒ three per day. The first auction starts at 10 a.m., followed by 12 p.m. and 4 p.m. Wednesday’s auctions are at 10 a.m., 12 p.m., and 2 p.m. All times are in EDT.

Cities that participated in last year’s salt auction should have received an email with instructions on registering for the upcoming event.

Orbis provides the following tips for city officials:

  • Make sure you provide your most accurate estimate.
  • Local governments reserve the right to accept/reject any or all bids.
  • Salt is specified as “delivered as needed,” meaning you call in incremental orders to your supplier when needed.

Joining the auction and posting your requested amount should be a five-minute process. Please call KACo at 502.208.1007 any time with questions regarding the salt auction.
