Public Services

Cities provide many services to their residents. Those categorized as "public services" include waste and recycling collection, streets and roads, parking facilities, cemeteries, riverport facilities, natural resource management, and others. While such activities make up the single smallest expenditure type (about 8%), cities still spend over half a billion dollars each year on public services.

While general revenues support these activities, some intergovernmental funds are available. For example, cities receive municipal road aid each year to help cover some of the costs related to streets and roads. Other services such as solid waste collection are funded either with General Fund dollars (i.e. tax dollars) or service charges, or both.
